How an Empty Belly Can Lead to a Full Heart or Why I Haven't Eaten in 10 Days

Fasting has some surprising benefits that aren't all physical.

The last time I chewed was 4 pm Monday, September 14th and the next time my jaw will get some exercise will be the 27th, but who's keeping track?  :)

I’m cleansing/fasting. This isn’t my first time, but it is the first time I’m really getting the desired effect – clarity.

Some people think that’s a load of crap (and what you believe becomes your truth), but that’s not you. You’re open-minded. And that’s why we connect.  :)

I’m saving my thoughts on why I disagree with those who believe that fasting’s unhealthy for today’s podcast, so I hope you’ll have a listen if you want to dive a bit deeper on the topic.

But as a quick quip (cause you know I had to get something in here) - think about it. The practice of fasting has been around for centuries. Centuries! It’s not only been used to heal many physical ailments, but it’s a big part of most religions.

In fact, Jews all over the world fasted yesterday for the highest of their holy holidays, Yom Kippur. So there. <wink> (I love how my blogs have coincided with the Jewish holidays.)

Fasting fits into most spiritual practices because when you add a dose of denial and deprivation into your life, you humble yourself and yield to a higher power.

And that’s what I wanted for my experience.

In the past, my reasons were purely physical – get a jump on weight loss, rid my body of the toxins from all that processed food (I do miss you Funyuns.), and kick-start a healthier lifestyle.

This time, I sought clarity. Seek and ye shall find, baby! (I don’t think the verse goes like that exactly…)

With the exception of the occasional outbound text to my best friend stating very emphatically, “I’M HUNGRY!!!” there’s been nowhere to turn but inward.

(I did try to retreat into the pantry once, but when I caught myself in a trance staring a can of white beans while simultaneously sniffing a container of Fluff, I decided it was best to keep that door closed.)

The beginning wasn’t so easy because that’s when most of the “negative” physical symptoms happen.

It wasn’t so easy to be all zen while I had body aches, felt lethargic, and couldn’t fall asleep because my stomach growled so loudly… Actually, that’s still an issue!

I may have squirmed for a bit, but eventually I reached a place where I’m calm, focused, tolerant, patient, and mindful.

And that only happened by taking it hour by hour and day by day. (It was more like minute by minute at the start!)

But I knew what I wanted. And when you know what you want and why you want it - and that feeling of internal motivation is stronger than any discomfort - you’re able to move through it.

Today’s podcast is filled with much more about the wisdom that’s come out of this experience, so I hope you’ll take a break, have a listen, and go about your day with even more of a buzz.

I’m even going to share my absolute favorite thing to do while not eating, which you may think is absolutely torturous, but I can’t stop. I'm addicted.
