There's A Time To Act
Like An Ass

When you feel the weight of the world upon you, learn to shake it off.

Aloha, and Happy Thursday!!

I’m ecstatic to still be in Hawaii.  The natural beauty is so spectacular that I find myself in awe, saying “OMG!!” every few minutes!  The mountains, coastlines, skies, trees, flora, fauna (I just learned that word on this trip!), people, music, food, coffee…  Oh, how I love my coffee!  Vanilla Macadamia Nut – OMG!!!     Toasted Coconut’s up next.

Here’s a little story for you:

One day, a farmer’s donkey fell into an abandoned well.  The animal cried pitifully for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; so it just wasn’t worth it to him to try to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him.  They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.  Realizing what was happening, the donkey at first cried and wailed horribly.  Then, a few shovelfuls later, he quieted down completely.

The farmer peered down into the well and was astounded by what he saw. With every shovelful of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing.  As the farmer’s neighbors shoveled dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.  Pretty soon, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off, to the shock and astonishment of all the neighbors.

If you feel like you’re getting buried by confusion, frustration, emotion, anxiety, pressure, negativity, struggles – whatever – do yourself a favor and SHAKE IT OFF!

What if that donkey continued to cry and was like, “This sucks!  It’s not fair!  Why is this happening?  These people are mean.  Why are they doing this to me?  Wah!!”?  Or thought, “Oh well.  Surely there’s nothing I can do.  Better just lay here and eventually be crushed by the weight of everyone else’s crap.”?

No, this smart ass (pun definitely intended!) realized early on he was wasting precious time and energy crying and wailing.  He knew that if he didn’t give up, in time he would rise above
his circumstances.

I’m not saying you don’t have the right to feel how you feel when you feel bad.  We’re human and when sucky stuff happens, it’s only natural to have an initial reaction that may not be so enlightened.  Just don’t stay there for long.

When it comes to the pool of self-pity, go ahead and take a skinny dip, but don’t wallow in it!  Next time you feel weighed down by any negative stuff, just act like an ass and shake it off!

More tips for when you’re feeling the weight of the world upon you:

    • Shift your perception.  Remove yourself from the situation and be aware of what’s happening. Look at it as if you were on the outside of your life looking in.
    • Don’t take anything personally.  (This can be a real challenge, and I’ll go into depth on this topic in a future post!)
    • Think about what you can learn from the situation.  Have the attitude that life’s like a classroom, and you have tests and pop quizzes to pass in order to move up a grade.
    • Remind yourself that things don’t happen to you.  They happen for you.

Now, I’d love to hear from you! Do you have a hard time shaking things off?  If so, what could you do to change that?  If not, that’s awesome.  Don’t keep secrets!    Tell us how you do it in the comments!
