Have you ever felt stuck? Like you’ve “hit a wall” and don’t know what to do? You’ve spent time and energy thinking through all the potential outcomes and choices you could make and feel nothing but beat and defeated before you even make one? I’ve been there and it’s no fun!
This topic triggered a memory of a proverbial wall I was once up against – Big Katie.
Big Katie was on a soccer team I used to play against. (Before you go thinking I was some mean girl, let me just say that she got that nickname because of her stature, strength and presence. Rumor had it Katie gave that name to herself!)
Big Katie had intense focus and determination. Even her resting face said, “I’m going to take you down!” and that look just got fiercer as she was running toward the goal with a soccer ball!
I knew that expression well, because I watched it one time, transfixed, as I stood frozen on the field while she came barreling towards me. The face didn’t lie, and she promptly delivered on its promise. Ouch!
After that incident, whenever I would come up against Big Katie, I’d just stop. I’d lose focus and ultimately, the ball.
Needless to say, this didn’t make my teammates or coach happy, and it didn’t make me happy either! Deep down, I knew I was letting my fear of what could possibly happen (or not happen) keep me from my goal – literally and figuratively.
Fast forward a few more games. I had the ball and was driving it down the field with almost no obstacles in the way except Big Katie of course.
Cheers could be heard from the sidelines (thanks fam!) but my inner voice was even louder. It said now was time to keep going.
With a look that rivaled Katie’s fierce face, I ran towards the goal. As I got closer and closer, she got bigger and bigger, but I didn’t stop. In fact, I wound up plowing right though Big Katie and knocking her down! (Don’t worry, she didn’t get hurt. No surprise there!)
Now, I didn’t wind up scoring a goal, but it was all good. In that moment I learned the importance of getting out of my head, staying focused and moving forward. Taking that action built my confidence which eventually helped me to score goals.
Here’s how I see it. It’s easy to just stop when we come up against a wall. We imagine every potential negative scenario, making our fears even bigger and exhausting ourselves. Our minds shut down and we get paralyzed.
But when we take action, we create energy and momentum that helps us get unstuck in no time!
Depending on what the situation is, this may not feel so easy breezy. For me, running through a brick wall hurt a bit, but it would have been more painful to come off the field (yet again) knowing I didn’t go for it.
You’ll never know what’s on the other side of that wall if you don’t do something to find out. Bee brave!
