What You Must Do This Summer

So, no more pineapples.  I said “Aloha!” to Hawaii and it’s back to the Big Apple for me!

My vacation was absolutely spectacular!  Not only did I ingest more fish tacos with pineapple salsa in two weeks than I have in my whole life, but I was able to have fun and connect with my family in a way I hadn’t experienced in a long time, and that felt truly amazing.

We talked, walked, kayaked, hiked, swam, played, laughed (I mean seriously cracked each other up!), ate, drank, read, relaxed, and despised Frank Underwood together.  (If you don’t know who I’m referring to, I’m talking about the character Kevin Spacey plays on House of Cards!  Get on over to Netflix and binge, baby, binge!  I wouldn’t steer you wrong in life, your career, or when it comes to TV!)

Here are my Top 11 (it’s one of my favorite numbers, what can I say?) takeaways from my time away:

  1. When you allow your mind and body to relax, it’s like Drano for clogged creativity pipes!  With just one treatment, the flow can go on!
  2. My family and I may not be perfect, but it’s clear we’re full of nothing but good intentions and love for one another!  I heart you family!
  3. Less is more — when it comes to packing, that is, not fish tacos.  Definitely not fish tacos.
  4. Gelato actually tastes good everywhere, and much better when your
younger brother shares his with you because he’s sweet and can afford to
eat two scoops and you should probably just stick to one…
  5. I sleep much better without Tommy stepping on my hair as he walks across my head each morning.
  6. Having a washer/dryer in your apartment is an absolute luxury that I aspire to one day.
  7. When hiking through the rainforest after a night of major rain, it’s
best to “embrace the mud”.   This is a metaphor for life, spoken by the
handsome tour guide I fell for.  Literally, I fell, a few times.
  8. I don’t miss my upstairs neighbor.  (Really?  You need to roller
skate above my head at 2am?!  It’s amazing how much better I sleep when
    that’s not happening.)
  9. I really like posting pictures on Instagram! Check out my Hawaii pix!
  10. It feels good to get lei’d!  (I couldn’t resist that play on words!)
  11. Laughter really is the best medicine – preventative or emergency!

While you may not be able to physically get away or be gone for long, you can certainly escape in your mind and take some quick getaways throughout your day, week, and/or summer.

Close your eyes and go to your happy place. Take a walk around the block.  Look through pictures that bring back fun memories.  Watch some funny videos on YouTube.  Even if it’s just
for a few minutes, it’ll be sure to refresh.

This, my friend, is imperative.

Much like a volcano, we’re all better off when there’s a continuous release, so pressure doesn’t build and we erupt!

So what will you do this summer to take a break and keep yourself refreshed and recharged?  Share in the comments below!
